Review: Ashes of the Sun

Ashes of the Sun Ashes of the Sun by Django Wexler
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This was an interesting take on sibling rivalry. At first you start out with a brother and sister who enjoy each others company. Then someone comes along and takes the sister away. All while injuring the brother but also giving him the motivation he needs to destroy those who took away his sister. And by the way these people are so powerful the brother has little to no chance of avenging himself or his family. Fast forward a number of years now the brother finds himself on the opposite side of his sister in a fight for a discovery that could upset the balance of power in their world.

If you did not grow up with a sibling this book may seem strange to you. The beginning is very long winded. and drags on and on. The middle is better and the end feels like a race to the words, the end. At least until the next book in this new series. The fighting between the siblings is what is supposed to carry the book. The problem is when one multi-legged character gets involved the story loses itself for the rest of the book. As the book progresses it becomes apparent that this book has an editing problem. That problem being that it needed a better editor. Beyond the starting premise of the book the rest of it drags on for chapter after chapter. A better editor could have helped condense most of this book to half of its size.

There is no need for the book to be as long as it is. If you've read books like this it becomes clear that the last few chapters will go by quickly while you slog through the middle of the book. That is exactly what ends up happening which takes away any interest I have to read the other books in the series. I can relate to the sibling issues but the rest was just boring. At some point I hope the writer finds a better editor to help him narrow do the ideas he wants to get across. Beyond that this book was too painful to make me a fan of this series.
