I finished reading Daniel Suarez newest novel Change Agent a few months ago. Scroll down the posts to check my review of it. While it may not be the greatest thing I ever read it did have some interesting ideas. I was looking through some news feeds and I found an article that relates indirectly to the book. This got my attention because while I knew the idea of such a thing was maybe twenty years away I didn't know that the trials were going on now. In the book the technology has been around for years and is very refined. But the belief is there is a limit to what can be done. That is until a 'change agent' is created that disproves the previous belief.
The book outlines the threats that could come from gene therapy going to extremes. It's like in Jurassic Park when Jeff Goldblums character questions whether our precautions are enough to prevent abuse. The idea of "life finds a way" is the thing he tries to drive home to everyone else in the movie. We know things get crazy from there but the idea makes sense. Do the gains of using and improving this technology out way the dangers? Obviously some companies have already started but I think the idea of genetic editing is something to think about the consequences of using. Basically Pandoras Box was open a long time ago.

I noted that the books take place primarily outside of the United States. That's something to take into account when you think of this technology. Just because the U.S. may have certain views on changing the genetic structure of cells does not mean others share their reservations. Both books try to show that the good intentions of the many can lead to abuse by a few. In the case of Change Agent, one kind of abuse involves Scarlet Johansson. That's just a savage thing that hurts my feelings.

Check out the article with the link. Also, read Change Agent by Daniel Suarez in available in physical print and online. Just because it wasn't my favorite book doesn't mean it might not be yours. Also read Michael Crichtons novel Jurassic Park. Sure you could watch the movie but the differences from the book should be interesting. Add to the fact that the book was published in 1990 you can see some connections to our present day. Maybe by reading both you can compare what both authors had in common and where they differentiated.

Change Agent by Daniel Suarez
By the middle of the 21st century CRISPR genetic editing is routinely used to eliminate deadly heritable disorders in human embryos. But CRISPR technology is capable of much more--and parents know it. Black market embryo labs soon appear, ready to make risky edits with potentially unintended consequences for humanity. But having become the most profitable criminal enterprise in the world, the ruthless genetic cartels researching new edits aren't about to stop. In fact, they're prepared to go to any length to defend their market. And Interpol Agent, Kenneth Durand is their top target.
Michael Crichton by Jurassic Park
A billionaire has created a technique to clone dinosaurs. From the DNA that his crack team of scientists extract, he is able to grow the dinosaurs in his laboratories and lock them away on an island behind electric fences, creating a sort of theme park. He asks a group of scientists from several different fields to come and view the park, but something goes terribly wrong when a worker on the island turns traitor and shuts down the power.
