It was a nice trip back to Mars, until the last chapter. While John Cater loves talking about how awesome John Carter is I didn't feel the same about him or this book. There are heavy racial undertones in this book that lessened my enjoyment of the story. The ending made no sense by creating a mechanism that can't be escaped but someone, somewhere has the keys to open it. This was a book of its time but I think it wasn't am enjoyable book even back then.
