Review: Wonder Woman movie

I got an early screening of this movie like many people did. But unlike other people I'll give you some insight on why this movie is good. First let me say that you should go and see this movie in a movie theater. It works well on the big screen. Next, if you've seen a few superhero movies with a female you'll understand that normally she's going to see a superhero movie for your sake. There are very few movies where a woman watches a movie where another woman is the star who is the lead superhero. I know you'll think of the Alien franchise and Ellen Ripley but she was just a person doing extraordinary things. The Bride, Beatrix Kiddo from the Kill Bill movies was an extraordinary person doing extraordinary things but she was not doing superheroic things. Wonder Woman is a superhuman person doing superheroic things. You don't get to take a female to see that often with the caveat that the movie was good. This is that rare movie so take advantage of it and see it in the theater.

Now it does have its flaws. After seeing the trailers I had figured out that this movie was going to be D.C. Comics and Warner Brothers version of Marvel and Disneys Captain America: The First Avenger. I was not wrong about that. This movie has many similarities to that movie. Anyone who says otherwise is a moronic fool. There's a scene where a Captain named Steve has to sneak aboard an experimental plane and stop it from destroying a city. Guess which movie I'm talking about Captain America or Wonder Woman? (I can't wait for Honest Trailers to do Wonder Woman.) Like the Captain America movies I think/hope that the sequels to this movie can do what the sequels to Captain America did, be better than the previous one.

This is the D.C. Comics movie that finally cracks the Marvel code of making movies, by basically stealing/copying the code. That's not a bad thing but it is something that I believe should be acknowledged. The writers for this movie did something that I really liked but more importantly did the little things right. One example comes from Superman versus Batman. In that movie you get the feeling that Wonder Woman had only few lines because her accent is very pronounced. This movie actually gives you a reason why she would have a pronounced accent. Small things like that abound in the movie. My one major gripe was the love aspects of the movie. The whole power of love thing didn't work in Interstellar and it doesn't work in Wonder Woman. Don't tell me the power of love overcomes EVERYTHING. That's just stupid. Love has an opposite, hate. They are equal and opposing therefore one never truly overcomes the other when taken to their extremes. This movie goes there near the end. Stop it with that already. Don't bring that into the sequel. She fights for TRUTH, not love.

This is not a feminist propaganda or homosexual fantasy movie. This is a superhero movie that first tries to be a good movie. That's why it works. The superhero stuff fits in when its needed but I think its was the humor that holds this movie together. When Wonder Woman explains to people what her mission is there's level of comedy that comes from hearing her say it. It's like she believes everything shes saying but no one in their right mind should take her seriously. Overcoming that and revealing the truth to her words goes back to the comics. She does not lie. The Lasso of Truth does not work for a liar therefore she never lies. I won't get in to the whole philosophical debate about truth being subjective. Her believing her truth is something that comic fans should see and understand how it holds the movie together.

The stars of the movie stopped by the theater before the movie started which was nice. Everyone did their part well. The director did a very good job and I hope she comes back for the sequel. The lead actress may not have been my first choice but she did a good enough job. Now the next time we see Wonder Woman will be in Justice League in November so lets see how she carries over into that movie. Overall I'll say it again this movie was good, very good. I had the bar set low for it. This being a D.C. movie my expectations were lowered especially after the garbage of Superman versus Batman. This movie not only get over the bar it flies over it easily. I'll make another post about how this movie really did a great job for the comic book but for now that's it. Enjoy.
